I decided today that instead of eating lunch at my desk for the 5th time in a row this week I would instead venture outside and have lunch at the park. I headed to my favorite bagel place, picked up a Pumpernickle Bagel with Low Fat Veggie Cream cheese, a bottle of Cherry Coke Zero and made a beeline for the park.
With the exception of about 30 or so kids running through the park and a smattering of people walking their dogs here and there, the place was pretty much mine (you get used to the hustle and bustle after awhile).
I started munching on my bagel when I started to get 'that feeling'. You know the one, when you feel like someone is watching you with hungry eyes. I lowered the volume on my Zune (Duncan was singing sweet nothing's in my ear) and looked around.
Nothing.
Then I looked down ...
The poor little fella looked so pitiful that I plucked off a piece of Pumpernickle and tossed it in front of his trembling hands. Faster then I could blink, he snatched it up and started munched away.
I don't get out much so this was fascinating to me. As I watched, this little acrobat deftly jumped up on to the bench next me and within seconds made his way to the top, bagel piece still in hand.
Suddenly my little friend stopped chewing and slowly turned his head towards me. And when I say slowly, it was the slow kind of turn you usually see in horror movies when the killer has caught the eye of the camera and ever so slowly turns til he's gazing at you straight in the eyes ...
At this point I swear I could read his mind as he tried to decided whether he should finish eating his bagel or if he should jump square onto my face and claw my eyes out. I took the hint, dropped the camera, looked away and finished eating my bagel in silence. I felt like he continued watching me for an eternity until he got tired and finally skampered away ...
